Annual Medical Physical | Katy Realtor | What about Your Physical?

I had my now annual physical today similar to last year in May 2014. Some folks might read that sentence and say ‘So what” and ‘Who cares”. My primary reason to write this blog is to encourage someone who is over 40 years old and not planning to get an annual physical to do just that by biting the bullet and getting it done. Even if you under 40 years old a physical is a good idea as a problem might be uncovered which you had no idea existed.
Most of my life I have gone to GP’s and typically I would have to have about 2-3 office visits a year with the several doctors ( over many years) to renew my various prescriptions. Usually these sessions with the GP were short with really no good purpose, examination or direction. During 2013 my lovely wife Yolanda, who stayed on my case for a long time, finally got me convinced I needed to get a full physical by her Doctor who is an Internist and an excellent one. Last two May’s as I had mentioned I had probably the first real physical examinations of my entire life by Doctor Brian Goldfarb who works for Medical Clinic of Houston LLP. ( A little plug here). Without question his examinations were easily the most comprehensive I have ever had. He covered me from head to toe. In the past I got several vaccinations which I needed. Are your vaccinations up to date? How about Tetanus? You need to check all of these..
Today was year three and I had to get up at 5 AM. I really did not mind going even though I have a terrible phobia of needles dating back to when I was a child and frankly of certain Doctors. Any physical examination should include extensive blood work even though the current government does not think this is necessary ( Say What?). The physical went very well and since I have lost approximately 40 pounds since February 2014. My Doctor shook my hand at the end of the exam and said you should be very happy and proud of your progress over a short period of time. I am and I feel so much better and stronger.
Obviously, I do not know the results of all the tests yet but the point I am trying to make is I had it done and if something is wrong it should show up somewhere in the blood work, exam, EKG and urine sample. Last year my blood work showed a huge improvement over the first exam. Men as a general comment tend not to want to go to Doctors. I can safely say I fall into the category and hated to go to any Doctor. I have had several surgeons over the years tell me I needed immediate surgery on my knees, toes, shoulders to name a few and I have to this day not had any of this stuff done except for hip replacement surgery in 2010 but I was in constant excruciating pain before the surgery. After now going through my third round of a complete physical, I encourage especially all reluctant men and women to go and get a complete physical. Who knows as this step may just save your life and spare your family a lot of anguish.
The most important assets all of us own is our health which is what I have said many times in my articles. Many of us do not appreciate this fact until it is too late. If I can bite the bullet and man up so can you or anyone else. It really is not that bad going through the physical exam process. It still makes me uneasy and nervous but so what. Today fighting heavy Houston traffic was significantly worse than seeing Dr. Goldfarb. Houston traffic going into the medical center and downtown is a horrible.
