Apple Computers are not Susceptible to getting Virus/Malware.. Or are They!

Apple Computers are not Susceptible to getting Virus/Malware.. Or are They!

Conventional wisdom has been for many years concerning Apple computers and other products not being vulnerable to the whole array of viruses and or malware which exist. There is a fairly new computer security problem called Ransomware and Apple products are potential targets and can easily get infected with this form of Malware. I know as it happened to me.

About 2 weeks ago I did a Google search for the this specific vendor's web site as their invoice did not have the information.( Why??) The top two items in the search looked like what the real site is suppose to look like but were phony. I ended up with the old scam of needing my computer to be scanned immediately for viruses. These crooks even had a supposed Apple Support screen pop up and tell me to call this phone number right away. That day I was able to somehow get rid of the phony scan request by using just the internal Apple clicks for stopping this stupid scan request.

I was aware of this situation as a friend of ours had the same thing happen about 2 days earlier and he had to spend a lot of time on more than one occasion on the phone with Apple support to finally get rid this Malware. The Apple support folks told him to never call the phone number as the scam artists will charge $400 to stop this nonsense. They also said the groups doing this Ransomware are located overseas (several in India) and no one can stop this crap from occurring.

We got back from a quick Valentine’s getaway late last Monday. I had not used my Apple computer the whole time we were away. Tuesday morning the problem with this scam showed up in full force when I logged onto my Apple MacBook Air. No matter what I did or do not do it would not go away. It was particularly problematic when trying to access ActiveRain?? Once again I was getting this screen telling me Apple Support wants me to call this listed phone number right away. This happened as the Google Search I used sent to me to a corrupt web site. Hmmm.

I do remember a few months ago having several folks told me and everyone else how the new Google Algorithm Is looking for well written posts which have to 1,000 words or more to get good SEO from any post!  I was skeptical  about this whole concept as I found most searches have no ability to sort out dates and old posts can and do show up in search results. I am even more skeptical now after this search episode and ending up with Malware.

I finally did a search on the my Mac for a Malware vendor I had purchased their program from for the last 2 years to be used on my HP laptop. The search results again had 2-3 sites at the top of the search and these sites did not look correct when I opened them.  Of course each site wanted me to immediately download their supposed  software to get rid of this issue. I went to my HP and opened the vendor’s site by using the company’s loaded software. Guess What? I was correct as these 2-3 sites were not the real site. I sent the correct site URL via Email to myself. Lucky for me this vendor now has a Mac version for its Malware protection software. I downloaded the software and finally got rid of this Ransomware. I wasted at least 3 hours dealing with this mess.

If anyone wants the name of this software vendor call or text  me.

Norton Security in its recently published paper”What Lies Ahead for 2016” computer security shows Ransomware as the number one potential security issue for 2016. Apple and Android products are targets and very vulnerable.

My advice is to be careful with Google search results and maybe consider obtaining a Malware protection software program for your equipment even if it is a Apple product.
